This soft approach to Rembrandt short lighting details the purpose of the asset, by placing an area light directly inside of the lamp as a bonus to serve the asset’s purpose. Notice how the light toward the front of the image is dimmer compared to the rest of the wall.

Figure 18 – Cheat sheet: Pro portrait lighting setups. Digital Camera World (Matt Golowczynski, 2018)

I had another go at the coloured gels option, this time allowing what the light is like when it’s lighting up a dark room or outside at night. Behind the asset, a hue of light-green dominates the right side as with the standard dark green approach is to the left. I intensified the area light within the lamp to illuminate the side of the wall.

Support Bollards & Rope

Figure 19 – Cheat sheet: Pro portrait lighting setups. Digital Camera World (Matt Golowczynski, 2018)

I don’t think I’ve touched upon the Split with Fill approachable option yet, so I did my best to replicate that with this asset. I made this by adding an area light to one side and setting the values to medium. I then added another light on the opposite side, preparing to dim its values so it could act as a reflector. One big disadvantage was with where the actual reflectors were located, as I had no idea how to access them. I would hope to find out where they were located so I can access them in the future. Other than that, this was a decent render.

Figure 20 – Cheat sheet: Pro portrait lighting setups. What I used was a light and placed it beside the camera, cranking the intensity up slightly and adding a light blocker to parts of the asset on the left. You can see the shadows of where the blocker was placed on the rope as its colour slowly transforms into a darker shade of red.

This post’s purpose is to document the rendered results of the assets created and textured in both Maya and Substance.
