For this week, we were tasked with developing our initial ideas for the game we are about to make. We have decided on a genre and setting from the last week and came up with some potential ways to bring that idea forward with some pre-production techniques. I was asked to create a mood board of each horror game to better develop the process of the game’s visual and artistic representation. I have collected 9 images from different games all within the same, chosen genre of the game and compiled them in a PureRef document. All, if not some of these would capture what may be the final visual representation of the project game.

Alien Isolation perfectly compliments the suspense with a first person view, immersing the player into the action of exploring an abandoned spaceship full of terrifying xenomorph creatures. The atmosphere and music surely makes this frightening to newcomers into the franchise.

Amnesia is a great example of a horror game that builds up tension and anxiety with the players. It also incorporates jumpscares and theming to marry the elements and feeling that you’re being watched.

Despite it’s main genre being a 3rd person survival horror game, Dead Space incorporates a sense of dreariness that the horror genre is known for. This is a great direction for what the game is going to use in regards to elements.

This co-op game encapsulates terror with fear, as not only does the atmosphere appear creepy, but also one of your friends is infected. You wouldn’t know who to trust if they really have the zombie virus. All of this makes playing the game a nerve-inducing experience.

It is your job to discover secrets at a deserted-looking high school filled with a creepy atmosphere that consumes the players into the action. You feel anxiety and dread running down your back, opening doors to not know what is on the other side. This is a great element to consider using for the project.

This creepy horror game incorporates many of the typical elements that may be suitable for the kind of game that is planned. The object the person is holding looks to be a flashlight or camera as they enter the shed, into the unknown. The game also includes jumpscares that gives fear into the player and corpses of asylum patients present in every room, making for a terrifying experience.

Another game which allows the player access to a camera and flashlight, also in first person view to engage with the player as if they are actually within the game. Many of the elements associated with horror lies here, like a darkened atmosphere, ghosts and sudden jumpscares. The multiplayer experience makes this more engaging as you and your friends investigate a haunted map full of strange events.

This game fully recaptures the horror themes in a way that there is now a first person camera, which allows you to be immersed into the game. The suspense and lack of music engages with the perception that you are not alone here, and that something or someone is following you.

This puzzle game’s location of a mysterious house and attic gives you that eerie feeling of curiosity of where the owner had vanished. The game also includes many creepy illusions to merely spook the players alongside the abandoned nature of the house.
