nCloth Exercise

Week 2′ activity with Jason and Tom required us to look at different ways to model curved shapes such as a round table. One of those techniques was by using NURBS curves to easily draw what we wanted on to the Maya interface. Our task was to make a table, a cloth, fruit bowl and a piece of fruit for the week. Here is what I come up with.

P.S. I failed to put a fruit bowl and fruit onto the table but it’s to reflect my progress so far.

The Basics

I know this isn’t a round table, but I wanted to flex my newfound extruding knowledge and edge loops to create a basic rectangular table to insert my cloth on.
The two supports needed for my table.
I added a flat surface on top to make it look like a table.

The Cloth

I selected another poly and hovered it above the table, making sure it is thin as a possible and it aligns with the center of the table perfectly.
I switched to FX and selected the nCloth tool in the toolbar. The image is a bad result, but we can fix that.
I looked in the object’s Channel Box and saw these subdivision options. Just in case, I set all to 50 to give me more edge loops on the polygon.
It turned this square from around 12 polys to over 100.
The results are much better, although I still need to improve aligning the cloth perfectly to stop it falling off the table.
