HP/LP Crate

For the week’s activity we were required to create a high polygon crate using Maya. Then, we had to create a low polygon version for us to start using UV on that crate.

High Poly

I start with a cylinder, cutting out the 3/4 of the model and extruding out the remaining quarter’s flat sides. I selected the curved edges and extruded, and world mode to add some more space, using scale to edge it out to flat space. My next step was to mirror the parts to make a crate handle, finishing it off with the multi-cut tool on the sharp edges to smoothen it out.

My next step was making the model below the handle as smooth and realistically rectangularly associated with the previous polygon., making sure the edges align with the handle.
All that was left is to duplicate to make two more to place above and below the two polygons and I combined all of them to make one polygon.
I created two more polygons and duplicated the handle poly to make it seem as a proper crate, complete with a plain at the bottom for the floor of the crate.
I made another polygon to act as a metal support corner. I did my best to align it with the corner’s as equally as possible. I isolated the poly by pressing CTRL + 1.
I extruded the opened edge at the top to close the ceiling and made a bridge from it’s bottom brethren.
I scaled the bottom half of the polygon to fit the bottom of the crate. Here’s how it looks finished. I used this finished polygon to mirror the other corners to fit properly.
This is what the crate looks like with all four corner supports.

Low Poly

I repeated the same process like with the high polygon crate, but this time I set the edges to point towards the corner to lower the poly count. This is how it looks.
I applied the same plain as a floor component to the crate to give it some grounded appearance.
This is the finished lower polygon crate made with the same process with slight adjustments. Hopefully, I will apply some UV elements onto this.
